We have had a lovely week in Nursery. The children have been very busy making decorations to sell at the Christmas Fayre next Saturday. Please come along and buy the decoration your child has made. They are very proud of them. We have also had great fun trying to see which material would be best to keep Humpty Dumpty safe. Unfortunately Humpty Dumpty broke a couple of times!! We enjoyed going down to Woodlands for the first time. The children were great at putting their suits and wellies on and listening carefully to instructions. We met Miele the Badger who helped us with our concentrating while we were down there. We had to find the other animals from Learning Wood and some of us had a go at using natural materials to make a home for them. Annabel, Harry and Rosie all thought their favourite part was finding the animals. We also explored the Muddy Kitchen. Layla made "chocolate milk" and Lilly made a "chocolate cake." This week the children have been learning about different occupations. We have had a fire station role play outside and a fire station in the small world. The children have also enjoyed playing in the restaurant role play. The children talked about the different jobs their grown-ups did and talked a little bit about what they would like to do when they are grown up. The children would like to find out more about what jobs their grown ups do. Afternoon Nursery had a visit from Isabel's Dad who came in to talk about being a firefighter. He showed us his uniform and the children enjoyed trying on his helmet and jacket. In Maths this week we have been thinking about positional language and used objects from the rhyme 'Hey Diddle Diddle' to put in different places as well as give instructions to others. This week we have been learning about the artist Van Gogh and the painting Starry Night. The children were very good at describing the painting. Ethan thought he could see "the sea" and "a castle." Lulu could see the "moon". They had a go at painting the picture themselves using oil pastels and crayons for the circles and swirls and then using a blue watercolour painted over the top. We read the story 'Katie and the Starry Night' and the children were able to talk about the characters and what happened in the story. In Philosophy we thought about whether we would like to jump into the picture 'Starry Night.' Charlotte thought she would like to because she wanted to catch all the stars in the painting. Isobel wanted to go into the 'Olive Pickers' painting to pick olives. Blake decided he didn't want to go into the painting because "I'd be worried about my Mummy." The children have had an enjoyable week learning about Africa and how it is different to Redbourn. We read the story 'We're Going on a Lion Hunt' and acted it out in P.E. Lilly liked pretending to swim in the water and William liked walking on the benches. James, Blake, Freya and Jay all enjoyed using the African drums to make different sound effects for the story 'We're Going on a Lion Hunt.' We looked at some South African houses from the Ndebele tribe. They had lots of bright colours and shapes. We made our own ones, printing shapes onto card. Eva said she 'did a beautiful house. I put red and blue and green and then blue on it.' Jake painted a house. 'It looked like a triangle.' On Tuesday we did some African dancing in assembly. Skyla liked dancing to the African music. The children had a lovely time on Monday celebrating the school's 50th birthday. All the children made colourful and sparkly birthday crowns and enjoyed eating the birthday cake. We read Kipper's birthday and some children were able to predict what they thought would happen in the story. In Literacy we have been retelling the story of Little Red Riding Hood using the puppets. We have been learning about Harvest and why it is celebrated. We looked at different fruits and vegetables and talked about their shapes as we printed them using paints. The morning children sang the harvest song we have been learning in assembly and joined in with the actions. Afternoon Nursery sang to Mrs Byrne when she came to see us on Friday afternoon. The children have really enjoyed using the i-Pads in Learning through Play this week. We will be using them next week to move objects across the screen. This week in Nursery we have been reading the story Little Red Riding Hood and learning about which way to hold a book and how to follow the words. We enjoyed joining in with some of the words 'What big teeth you have Grandma'. In Maths we packed a basket of cakes for Grandma and had to make sure that Grandma and Little Red Riding Hood had the same number of cakes. This involved careful counting and moving the cakes around so that there were the same on each plate. We have been talking about and drawing our families. In P.E. we are very impressed with how quickly the children have been getting changed. This week we learnt a Beanbag dance, balancing the beanbag in different places on our body and we listened carefully to the tambourine, stopping on a coloured spot when we heard it. What a wonderful week we have had in Nursery getting to know all the children. We have been really pleased with how the children have settled. The children have really enjoyed starting to explore all the different areas in Nursery both inside and out. They are beginning to learn the rules and expectations for the different areas. Some children have shown us their painting skills, drawing lines and circles with different coloured paints. Scarlett had a go at mixing the colours together to try and make pink. They have shown off their cutting skills, following straight lines and some investigated how to operate the scissors. On Friday they really enjoyed using the bikes and scooters. The children are trying really hard to learn the welcome and goodbye songs and to get to know the other children in their group. Millie and Isla have really enjoyed using the instruments in our music area. Next week we will be reading the story 'Once Upon a Time' and thinking about what the ...
